Sedation Dentistry in Atlanta

Comfortable Dental Care for Patients with Dental Anxiety

Visiting the dentist doesn’t have to be stressful. At Autumn Dental, we understand that many patients feel anxious about dental treatment. Whether you have mild dental anxiety, a sensitive gag reflex, or simply want a more relaxed experience, we offer sedation options that can help you feel comfortable throughout your visit.

Our team provides nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and twilight sedation to help patients receive the dental care they need in a calm, comfortable environment.

Comfortable, Anxiety-Free Dental Care with Dr. Barnett

What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry uses medications to help patients relax during dental treatment. Depending on your individual needs and the procedure being performed, sedation can reduce anxiety, increase comfort, and make lengthy appointments feel much shorter.

Many patients who have avoided the dentist for years find that sedation allows them to receive treatment with significantly less stress.

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

Nitrous oxide is one of the safest and most commonly used forms of dental sedation.

During treatment, you breathe a carefully controlled mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen through a comfortable nasal mask. Within minutes, most patients experience a feeling of relaxation while remaining awake and able to communicate throughout the procedure.

Benefits of nitrous oxide include:

  • Helps reduce dental anxiety
  • Takes effect quickly
  • Wears off within minutes after treatment
  • Allows most patients to drive themselves home afterward
  • Safe for both adults and many children

Twilight Sedation

For patients who experience greater anxiety or who are undergoing longer procedures, twilight sedation may be recommended.

Twilight sedation allows patients to remain deeply relaxed while still breathing on their own and responding to verbal instructions if necessary. Many patients remember very little about their procedure afterward, making treatment feel much easier than expected.

Our doctors will determine whether twilight sedation is appropriate based on your medical history, treatment needs, and overall health.

Benefits of Sedation Dentistry

Sedation dentistry can help patients who:

  • Experience dental anxiety or fear
  • Have had difficult dental experiences in the past
  • Have a strong gag reflex
  • Need multiple procedures completed during one visit
  • Have difficulty sitting comfortably for extended periods
  • Want a more relaxed dental experience

We Do Not Provide IV Sedation

Autumn Dental does not provide IV sedation or general anesthesia in our office.

If a patient requires IV sedation or hospital-based general anesthesia, Dr. Barnett can discuss your treatment needs and, when appropriate, refer you to a qualified hospital-based provider for care.

For many routine dental procedures, however, nitrous oxide or twilight sedation provides excellent comfort while allowing patients to safely receive treatment in our office.

Is Sedation Dentistry Safe?

Yes. Sedation dentistry has been safely used for many years when administered appropriately and with careful patient screening.

Before recommending sedation, we will review your medical history, current medications, and treatment plan to determine which option is best for you.

Your safety and comfort remain our highest priorities throughout your visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I be asleep?

No. Patients receiving nitrous oxide remain awake and able to communicate. Twilight sedation places you in a deeply relaxed state, but you are not under general anesthesia.

Can I drive home after nitrous oxide?

In most cases, yes. Nitrous oxide wears off quickly after treatment, allowing many patients to resume their normal activities shortly afterward.

Do you offer IV sedation?

No. Autumn Dental does not provide IV sedation in the office. If IV sedation or general anesthesia is medically appropriate, we can discuss referral options with qualified hospital-based providers.

Who is a good candidate for sedation dentistry?

Patients with dental anxiety, sensitive gag reflexes, difficulty sitting through lengthy procedures, or those undergoing extensive dental treatment may benefit from sedation. We will evaluate your health history to determine which option is right for you.

How do I know which sedation option I need?

During your consultation, we’ll discuss your treatment plan, medical history, and comfort level to recommend the sedation option that best fits your needs.
