How Do Water Flossers Work?

There are a lot of ways to keep your teeth and gums clean. Many products are designed to make the process easier, especially when you’re between dental cleanings or don’t enjoy using traditional floss. Water flossers are an excellent example and can be a successful part of your home care routine.

Water Flossers

When it comes to the care of your smile, the gums sometimes get neglected. Your gums play an important part in the natural long life of your teeth. When too many bacteria build up under the gums regularly, they become inflamed and pull away from your teeth, resulting in bone loss around the tooth roots.

In years past, traditional floss was the only option for cleaning below the gums where a toothbrush didn’t reach. But now we have water flossers.

A water flosser doesn’t require any stringed floss; instead, it relies on the power of water. A high powered stream of water flows through the narrow nozzle and can be aimed along the gumlines and between teeth. The steady stream of water will wash away food debris or plaque buildup as deep as 6-7mm below the gums, if there are periodontal pockets.

Simply trace the water flosser along your gums, pausing between teeth, and taking time to point it down into any active periodontal pocket areas.

Using a water flosser can sometimes be a little messy, so be sure to lean over the sink or try using it in the shower instead.
