The words “You need a root canal” are usually followed by feelings of fear or dread. Root canals have gotten a bad rep over the years, but they are one of the most common treatments performed today.
Tooth pain shouldn’t be ignored with the hopes of it going away and avoiding a root canal. At times, all that’s needed is a composite filling to remove the decay and get you on your way. At other times the cavity may have progressed into the nerve and a root canal is the only option to relieve your pain.
How Do You Know When You Need A Root Canal?
The best way to determine if you need a root canal is to schedule an appointment with Dr. Barnett if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms:
- Severe, persistent pain
- Swelling of the face
- An abscess on the gum
- Your tooth changing color
- Sensitivity
During your appointment, Dr. Barnett will order an x-ray to check the tooth below the gums and bone, around the root, and perform some assessments to see how the tooth responds. If the x-ray and tests reveal an infection has spread deeper into the nerve of the tooth, then a root canal will be planned to remove that infection and relieve the pain.
Root canals are a safe and effective way of stopping the spread of infection any further and saving the tooth. They actually help treat toothaches, rather than cause additional discomfort!
Think you need a root canal? Dr. Nicole Barnett will be happy to determine which treatment is right for you!
